Roommates, we are sending our prayers out to those who have been affected by the building explosion and fire that took place early Thursday in Silver Spring, Maryland.

According to Wavy TV-10, at least a dozen people have been seriously injured as a result of the explosion. There have been no fatalities reported as authorities work to evacuate the building and put out the fire. At the moment, it is not clear how many people are unaccounted for. It’s also not clear what led to the explosion, but at least one portion of the building has collapsed.

Officials say at least 150 firefighters battled the fire while the wind gusts went up to 30 mph.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said, “It was kind of horrifying. I mean, when you look at a building and see it gutted with the walls down and all the debris piled up, all I could think is, ‘What happened to the people?’ Hopefully, they’re at work. If they were home, you got to ask yourself, like, what happend to them?”

Andre Canard, a witness at the scene, spoke to NBC about the unfortunate explosion and said, “The first thing was that big boom. I could actually feel it on my back and it made me come out of my work shed. That’s when I saw everything to smithereens, and then the first two or three people screaming. These are really good people around here. People from all over the world live in this building. I hope that we didn’t leave anybody behind.”

According to CNN, firefighters were called in for the fire around 10:30 am Thursday. Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for the fire department shared that the four-story building had about between 12 and 18 units.

In recent months, there have been apartment buildings in different cities that have been destroyed due to fire. One took place in the Bronx, and another took place in Philadelphia.
