Mary J. Blige has been announced as the recipient for the Icon Award at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards taking place next month.

There is no doubt that Mary J. Blige is an icon as she has served us numerous hits over the years. Now Billboard will be honoring the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,” for her musical contributions, at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.

According to Deadline, MJB has been announced as the recipient of the Icon Award for this year’s award show. The award gives recognition to artists that “achieved excellence on the Billboard Charts and have made an indelible mark on music.” Aside from being honored, Mary who is a 10X BBMA winner, will also hit the stage to perform.

Mary spoke about the honor and said:

“My career has been such an incredible and unexpected journey that has included many turns into avenues I never could have imagined like acting, producing, launching businesses, and now even my own music festival. Through it all, I always one way or another gravitated back to my first love, music. To be recognized in this way at this moment, with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards, is an incredible honor and one that I am truly humbled by.”

The award was first given out in 2011. Past recipients of the award include Prince, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Cher, and a few other iconic artists.

Mary’s impact on music only becomes greater as she continues to add more hits to her legendary catalog.

Back in February, she released her 14th studio album “Good Morning Gorgeous,” and within the same month, she hit the stage during the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar.

When she’s not in her music bag, Mary is dominating both the movie screens and television screens. Aside from her current starring role as Monet Tejada on the Starz hit series “Power Book II: Ghost,” she is also scheduled to executive produce a Lifetime film based on her classic record “Real Love.”

As we previously reported, The Weeknd and Doja Cat are leading in nominations for this year’s BBMAs, and the show will be returning to Las Vegas on May 15th.
