The new voice of Detroit R&B has arrived, Only 1 Jackson is here to make his mark on the industry like no other. The Oak Park, Michigan native has set his sights on showing the world who he is and what he stands for. Thissomebull.com sat with Only 1 Jackson for a closer look into his life and career.
TSB: Could you introduce yourself to our readers?
ONLY1JACKSON: What up everybody, my name Only1jackson. I’m from Oak Park, Michigan.
TSB: Talk to me about growing up in Oak Park, Michigan.
ONLY1JACKSON: Growing up in Oak Park, Michigan was cool, in certain aspects. The neighborhood had its highs and lows. It wasn’t always as quiet and perfect as people perceived it to be. What I mean by that is the highs were hanging around good friends and people that I still have friendships with today. Like we would play football, basketball, tag, and other childlike games. But the lows were dealing with always fighting, having to stand your ground with gang bangers, and periodic shootings on the neighborhood basketball court.
As far as school went, I was pretty-well known. It was like if you had Jordan’s and braces you were rich. I didn’t have issues until open enrollment started. After that, I was fighting every day. Since I kept getting into trouble, my mom decided to move.
TSB: What artist influenced you to want to do music?
ONLY1JACKSON: Michael Jackson is the artist that influenced me to do music.
TSB: Tell me about your new projects and singles you’re working on.
ONLY1JACKSON: Right now, I’m working on my album Heartbreak City (released April 8th). Heartbreak City is about the different elements of love and each song is a different definition of what people’s perception of love is. It’s about a dude who’s going through a toxic relationship. He doesn’t realize the love he has, in front of him, until the end (of the album). The album begins with toxicity and ends with toxicity to exemplify toxic relationships.
Poisonous Potion and Love Last are two songs off the album that will be released as singles. Both songs basically set the tone for the album. Poisonous Potion (released March 3rd) exhibits the toxic side of love and Love Last (released March 24th) exhibits the definition of love.
TSB: Describe the feeling when you realized you were nominated for a 2023 Detroit Choice Award.
ONLY1JACKSON: I was in awe. It was an amazing feeling. It definitely opened my eyes to the hard I’ve been putting in. They could have chosen any other artists, but they chose me. It’s so much talent out here. I mean, there are so many artist that’s been doing music way longer than me so the fact that I’ve been doing it for two years and got this opportunity is blessing.
TSB: How did you come up with your stage name?
ONLY1JACKSON: I got my stage name because I’m the only male on my grandmother’s side of the family to meet milestones like graduating high school, going to college, and staying out of the streets; I’m the only child and there is no other Jackson besides me.
