Southwest Detroit is a unique place. A melting pot of some sorts located in the blackest city in America. That melting pot is home to one of the most diverse artists the industry has seen in years. CMC (Crush My Competition) Guapo is leading the charge of artist coming from the “Trenches”. Thissomebull.com recently had the opportunity to sit and speak with the Money Come First artist to speak about his community work, and how fatherhood has impacted his motivation.
TSB: Introduce yourself to our readers.
CMC Guapo: What up doe, Everybody I’m CMC Guapo.
TSB: Talk to me about growing up, what was Southwest Detroit like?
CMC Guapo: Fun, it’s different it’s a melting pot. So you grow up with friends from all ethnic backgrounds, you become educated on diversity and you understand the differences aren’t flaws.
TSB: You started as a battle rapper, tell me about that journey.
CMC Guapo: I use to battle rap in high school, being that I was from outta town most times it was a way to make a name for myself in school.
TSB: Talk to me about the community work your involved in.
CMC Guapo: I work closely with “D.L.I.V.E” which takes a holistic approach to help in the process of healing people who have been shot, stabbed, or beaten.
By providing housing and education opportunities, I always work closely with members of the community.
TSB: You’ve lived in Detroit, California and ATL. Do you think being well traveled helped develop your musical style?
CMC Guapo: Yes, think about 2012 a lot of west coast areas wasn’t poppin in Detroit, but I was hip as well as local ATL like young thug.
TSB: How do you balance fatherhood with the music industry?
CMC Guapo: Well now I have more motivation because it’s for my kids.
I can’t tell them to chase dreams if I don’t.
TSB: If you could pick one song to let people hear from you, what would it be?
CMC Guapo: Paradise because it’s clean so you don’t have a reason to no give it a listen, you can play it in the car with your grandma.
TSB: What are you currently working on?
CMC Guapo: I got a couple projects due at the end of the year. My 1st one is called, “Real Nigga Blues” or RNB FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES.
